Appliances that burn fuel produce carbon monoxide, a toxic gas that has no odor, color or taste. If a fuel-burning furnace, water heater or stove/oven develops a leak in its exhaust system, it can spew carbon monoxide into your home and possibly kill you and/or your family members no matter if you’re asleep or awake. This senseless tragedy is entirely preventable by installing a carbon monoxide detector on every floor of your home, especially in areas where people sleep and in areas where there is a major gas-burning appliance.
As carbon monoxide levels increase in a person’s body, their vital organs fail to receive adequate amounts of oxygen needed to function properly. At certain levels, symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can initially resemble the flu, including nausea, dizziness, headaches, confusion, fatigue and breathing difficulties. Concentrated levels of carbon monoxide in an individual’s system may also cause blood pressure to rise, giving skin a pink or red color.
Homeowners can be lulled into a false sense of security if they simply rely on a professional to clean and inspect their appliances annually. But appliances can fail at any time, releasing carbon monoxide into your indoor air. Without a carbon monoxide detector, most people will never know that they have a hidden danger lurking in their home.
Carbon monoxide detectors can be battery operated or run on direct household power. Battery-operated detectors will not function properly when batteries are weak or dead, and detectors that operate on household current will not function during a power outage unless they have a battery backup. Installation of both types increases your safety.
